DR HASSAN SHEIKH MOHAMUD

Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is the 10th President of Somalia, having assumed office on May 23, 2022. He previously served as the nation's 8th President from 2012 to 2017, making him the first Somali leader to be re-elected to the presidency. His leadership focuses on national reconciliation, institutional reform, and socio-economic development.

Mohamud began his career as an instructor at Lafole Technical Secondary School and later headed the Technical Teachers' Training College affiliated with Somali National University. During the civil war in the early 1990s, he remained in Somalia, working with NGOs and UN agencies on education and peacebuilding initiatives. In 1999, he co-founded the Somali Institute of Management and Administration (SIMAD), which evolved into SIMAD University, where he served as dean until 2010.

In 2011, Mohamud founded the Peace and Development Party (PDP) and was elected its chairman. He entered parliament in August 2012 and was elected President in September 2012, serving until February 2017. During his first term, he prioritized federalism, security sector reform, and economic recovery. After his initial presidency, he established the Union for Peace and Development Party in 2018. In May 2022, he was re-elected as President, emphasizing peace, governance, and development.

During his presidency, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has prioritized national reconciliation, fostering unity among Somalia's diverse communities and clans to build a cohesive national identity. He has championed economic development by promoting investment, improving fiscal management, and encouraging innovation in key sectors such as agriculture, technology, and trade. His administration has implemented significant institutional reforms, focusing on transparency, accountability, and modernizing Somalia’s governance structures. President Mohamud has also been a strong advocate for youth and gender empowerment, emphasizing education, creating economic opportunities for young people, and promoting women’s participation in governance. Additionally, he has facilitated critical infrastructure and connectivity projects, including the development of roads, ports, and digital networks, to integrate Somalia more effectively into the global economy.
